TRAINING

Research communication has never been more important. As the world grapples with climate change, social upheaval, and a host of other challenges, it’s vital for academic researchers to be able to explain their work clearly and confidently to colleagues, journalists, policymakers, funders, and wider publics.

I offer a one-day training programme that equips researchers with the skills they need to write for these diverse audiences. Attendees learn how to tailor their writing for different contexts — from mainstream articles to policy briefings and case studies — to increases the reach of their research, and multiply its impact. These skills enable research teams to create content for press releases, funding applications, group websites, research impact evaluations, philanthropy messaging, magazine articles, and more.

The training also explains how academic research findings make their way into the mainstream media, ensuring that attendees are well-equipped to improve their outreach work, and play a confident role in public discourse about their subject area. Understanding the basic principles that journalists use to select and write stories has another benefit — they encapsulate the foundations of accessible, efficient communication.

The one-day training course is designed to be delivered in person, on campus. Attendees then have the option to receive one-to-one advice sessions via Zoom, to tackle specific issues.

In 2025, I delivered two iterations of this course to faculty at the University of Exeter’s Geography department. The feedback from attendees included:

“I wanted to say thank you again for guiding us through the workshop today with such clarity and insight. It has already been helpful for me to progress my writing”

“I thought the course was absolutely outstanding — best training I’ve done at the uni in 14 years. Great mix of practical skills and cheeky tactics!”

“I really enjoyed your workshop, and found it so helpful”

Please contact me to find out more about the course. I’m also happy to discuss developing a bespoke version of the course to meet your needs.
